Shifting the focus.

The goal of this study was to play around with focal points and practice shifting it to something else using basic design elements like weight, color, repetition, size, etc. I started with five shapes (four circles and one square) that were all the same size, naturally making the square the focus since it was the odd man out. In the finished piece, the focus should be a circle.

Using color, pattern, and layering, I was successfully able to draw attention towards the last circle at the bottom and away from the square. The full-color circle holds your attention so well that it feels almost impossible to explore the rest of the design without having your eyes immediately snap back to the bottom circle.

This piece was selected to be shown in SUNY Oneonta's 2014 Annual Juried Student Art Show where it won the George E. Zimmerman Memorial Award.
